Your summer travel wake-up call

Hey Reader,

I don't want to stress you out, but... summer is closer than it feels.

I say this as someone who has absolutely waited too long to book things and then spent a lot of time on waitlists being very sad about it. Some experiences really do sell out months in advance, and the ones that fill up fastest are always the ones you most want to do.

So here's my gentle nudge: if you have any idea where you're going this summer, now is the time to start locking in the stuff that matters. Eiffel Tower tickets in Paris. Glacier hikes in Alaska. Whale watching and bear viewing tours. Luau reservations in Hawaii. Flytographer sessions in whatever city you're visiting (I just wrote about this... the good time slots go fast). Tours and activities through Viator or GetYourGuide for whatever destination is on your list.

Even if you don't have flights booked yet, you can often book experiences and cancel if your plans change. Way better than the alternative.

On the blog right now I've got resources for a bunch of the destinations I get asked about most for summer travel (Paris, London, Italy, Alaska, Hawaii, and more.) Start there if you're still figuring out where to go, and then start clicking "book."

Your future self will thank you.

Hey Reader, My friend and I just got back from Cusco a few weeks ago and I tried to book a Flytographer session while we were there. The timing didn't come together and we ended up without one. I am already annoyed about it. We have done Flytographer 20+ times over the years and every single time I look at those photos I am so glad we did it. They are the photos that actually live in our house. The ones that make it into the Christmas card. The ones where I am actually IN the picture instead...

Hey Reader, We are huge Disneyland people. Like, embarrassingly huge. It is basically a second home for us at this point. But every single time we go, the prices have crept up again. Tickets, food, parking, the inevitable moment in the gift shop where your kid finds the one thing that costs $45 and looks you dead in the eyes. It adds up so fast. I have spent years figuring out how to make Disneyland work without coming home feeling like we need to recover financially from our vacation, and I...

Hey Reader, The Paris Catacombs were entirely my kids' idea. I had been to Paris five times and avoided them every single trip. Six million skeletons in a tunnel underground with no easy exit is not exactly my idea of a good afternoon. But my boys had been researching it for months, and eventually I ran out of ways to say no. What I did not know going in: the Catacombs had only reopened three days before our visit, after a five-month closure for a full renovation. New lighting, a completely...
